January Lessons

West Coast Swing on Wednesdays

modified:  Rich Cooper continues his month-long series of Wednesday night West Coast Swing lessons. Rich is a recent competitor at the U.S. Open, and in addition to teaching West Coast Swing, also teaches a newer dance called Swango.

Rich, along with his assistant Judy Leslie, treated the class to great looking variations for anchor steps.  In the beginning, sounds heard were Oh, Oh and Whoops. By the end of the session, sound effects changed to Oh Yes!  No more boring anchors for this class as they will now be anchoring with taps to the side and triples that cross in front and other variations.  Rich made them look great while at the same time teaching how to maintain connection during this key WCS move.

Ten Years of Opening Nights!

Waterford Conference Center
Elmhurst, IL (map)

The Count Down is on – Just five weeks until DDC.    Early bird pricing is good through February 9.

Welcome New DDC Glamour Girl!

News Flash:  Our Flapper Girl, who has been with DDC for the last three years, has retired.   We hear she is auditioning for “So You Think You Can Dance”.    If you’d like to physically check that rumor out, see information below under Out of Town Happenings.

A brand new DaDance Camp schedule, which promises more open dance time than ever, will feature both national and local instructors.   Competitors:  Please take note of the new schedule change.

Friday night starts with workshops, a “Kick Off Dance Party” and all Just Dance and Strictly Competitions . The competitions include FirsTimers (TwoStep and West Coast) and Beginner through Advanced (Cha Cha, Nightclub, Two Step and West Coast Swing.)  There will be open dancing in at least one ballroom from 9:00 pm.     We encourage you to sleep over at the Quality Inn, 9ll South Route 83, Elmhurst IL 60126, which is adjacent to the Convention Center.  Call 630/279-0700 for reservations.  Added bonus:  They have a heated indoor pool.

Saturday is chock full of workshops, Jack and Jill Competitions (Novice and Intermediate at lunch time; Advanced is part of the evening show), Optional Dinner including a special tenth anniversary retrospective, a Saturday night show and the Roaring 20s Theme Dance.  If that were not enough, true to SNC’s tradition, free pizza will be served around midnight to keep you going.   (Now you see why we’re encouraging you to stay over).

Sunday completes the weekend with a casual continental breakfast and the Just Dance Awards Ceremony.

Our Emcees are Jennifer Jeffries, owner of the Chicagoland event, and Jimmy Mulligan, president of the Rebels Swing Dance Club, Chicago, IL.   SNC congratulates Jennifer in being awarded best MC 2007 by the UCWDC.

In the past, the volunteers have made this event successful. If you can lend a helping hand, contact Tobi Oberman, who needs folks to register attendees, monitor doors, decorate, score, etc. She critically needs strong men/women to set-up and tear-down dance floors. If you can contribute in ANY way, contact Tobi and she will optimize your talents and gifts!

Additional event information is available online, as well as the option to register online, or to download the form and mail it in.  While looking at the web site, be sure to check out the Photo Gallery under Da Dance Camp to see pictures of last year’s event. Peek-a-boo…you might see you!

Elections for the new Board will be held at the first March dance, and nominations are being accepted now!  Whether you want to continue to see things run as they are, or you want to see some changes, becoming a Board member is the way to make things happen.  You’ll find yourself working with a bunch of energetic, creative, hard-working people.  Does that sound like you?  If you have questions or would like to consider running for the Board, contact Leah, our Election Committee chairperson!
