new:  Thanks to Julie for Ten Years of Service

Swing ‘n’ Country thanks Julie Hein and her assistant Don Leynes for a triumphant month of Double Two in March.  A huge thank you also to Julie for her fifteen years of service to the Swing ‘n’ Country Board as Secretary. That’s right … fifteen whole years!  Julie is a founding member of SNC and will continue to be active in the Club as a Happenings editor, Dance Camp committee member and teacher.

Fresh from his Friday night lesson on March 20, Jeff Sanchez will be teaching us Two-Step during the month of April.  Jeff is known for his precise descriptions on how to execute moves and his unique choice of practice songs.  Here he is with the family puppy, “Tango.”

modified: April 4: Saturday.   The Chicago Rebels will hold a dance at The Centre at North Park, 10040 Addison Ave, Franklin Park, 60131.  Christopher VanHouten, May I Have This Dance, will teach an Intermed/Adv Hustle lesson from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  Nancy Tuzzolino will concurrently teach Hustle for Beginners.  Open dancing will follow until midnight..  (map)

April 10:  Friday.  X Dance holds a dance at The Centre at North Park, 10040 Addison Ave., Franklin Park, 60131.  Doors open at 7:00 pm.  Instructor is TBA.  (map) 

April 11:  Saturday.  Dance World hosts a dance at Hoffman Estates Community Center, 1685 W. Higgins Rd., Hoffman Estates, 60169 beginning with a 7:30 pm West Coast Swing lesson by Julie Hein.  General dancing begins at 8:30 pm.  (map)

April 23 – 26, 2009:   Swing Dance America 2009. Grand Geneva Resort and Spa, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Lots of workshops, lots of open dancing, competitions in both Swing and Hustle in two ballrooms. Swing ‘n’ Country has a table at the event. Contact Leah Noparstak if you’d like to be part of the SNC table.

Mondays:  Jill Popovich teaches Pilates in Arlington Heights starting at 7:00 pm.  Pilates helps dancers of all levels learn to move their bodies more efficiently, resulting in smoother dancing, longer endurance, and more flexibility. You will feel better too!  Contact Jill to learn more or for directions to the class.

Mondays:  Alisa Winkler teaches beginner West Coast Swing from April 6th to the 27th from 7:00 - 8:00 pm at Sonia’s Dance Rhythm, 534 W. Wise Rd. Schaumburg. Leaders are needed. (map)(details)

Wednesdays: SNC Wednesday lessons feature Jeff Sanchez teaching the Two Step.

Thursdays:  Maren Oslac teaches a four-week series of lessons through the month of March at Heart & Sole Dance Studio, 7038 183rd St., Tinley Park, 60477. Nightclub 102 begins at 7:30 pm, with ballroom classes following at 8:30 pm on April 9 and April 23 only.  (map)   

Thursdays: Alisa Winkler and Carlos Garcia will be teaching West Coast Swing April 2, 16, 23 and 30 at Studio Viva! in Palatine.  Beginner will be taught by Alisa from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  Intermediate will be taught by Carlos from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  Contact Alisa for more details. (map)

May 8, 2009:   Opening of Love n’ Dancing, a movie about the “only two things in life (that) are universal.”  Choreographed and produced by Robert Royston, and featuring Nicola Royston in a leading role, Chicago dancers are sure to enjoy watching “our” sport on the big screen. 

May 15-17, 2009:   Kristin & Monty Ham Private Lessons.  Ballroom City, Villa Park.  Book a private lesson with Chicago favorites by contacting Susie Kaplan.  (map) Kristin & Monty will also be teaching at the SNC dance on Friday, May 15.

new:  May 29-31:  Circle City Classic.   Marriott, Indianapolis, Indiana.  Fully-sanctioned UCWDC event.    We have SNC members competing at this one.

new: June 11-August 23, 2009:  Chicago Summer Dance Festival.  Grant Park. Group dance instruction in everything from ballroom to country line dancing on a 3,500 square foot open-air floor at the Spirit of Music Garden in Grant Park

July 2 - 4, 2009:   Sweet Home Chicago.  Wyndham Hotel O’Hare.  Party, dance, eat, dance, shop, dance (no competition) with the folks from the Windy City Jitterbug Club.

July 11, 2009:   WWII USO themed Swing Dance.  Green Bay, Wisconsin.  Hosted by the National Railroad Museum. The event includes a live swing band, cash bar, food, and WWII re-enactors. Contact Jacqueline Frank for more information. (map)

modified: July 17-19, 2009: The North East Wisconsin Rebels Swing Dance Club presents the 9th annual Wisconsin Dance Challenge. Radisson Hotel, Green Bay, WI.  Event Directors are Vivian Hahn and Doug Rousar.

August 21 - 23, 2009:  Chicagoland Dance Festival.  Crown Plaza Chicago O’Hare.  Look forward to workshops, open dancing and competitions at CDF.  See if its reputation as an event that is fun to the MAX is true.

August 27 - 30, 2009:  Swingin’ Dance Party.  Drawbridge Inn, Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky.  Thirteen hours of workshops and open dancing with no competition.  Staff includes Maren Oslac and Jeff Sanchez.
